El Sur Mundo Project is a laboratory of Dancetheatre makers conformed by argentine dancers and performers raised in Argentina.

El Sur Mundo Project researches and investigates on the fusion of modern dance, theatre and tango culture, exploring the layers of the Argentine-Latino American roots.

These dancers and performers create performances founded in theatre, dance and the tango culture.

The fusion of these elements shows a new physical, theatrical code which can be described as sober, metaphoric and emotional; elements which can be recognised in the roots of the Argentinean history and in the mean time those elements seem to be universal as well. A quality of their productions is the mobility and flexibility of the performances, what means that they can perform in different settings, either in an open interaction with the public or in the form of a presentation.

Vanavond met de groep: 'Guitarras Tango' , geformeert door Kay Sleking, bestaat uit twee gitaren, de lager gestemde guitarrón en zang; een combinatie van instrumenten die in de geschiedenis van de tango een belangrijke rol heeft gespeelt en nog speelt. Het repertoire van Guitarras Tango bestaat uit melancholieke en virtuoze tango’s, milonga´s en walsen. Zangeres Maria Jose Ortiz vult met haar warme stemgeluid het gitaarensemble prachtig aan en doet je geloven dat je in een tango café in Buenos Aires terecht gekomen bent!

Specialized on cavaquinho and acoustic guitar, Nelson Latif comes from the generation of Sao Paulo musicians of the eighties. With a background based on the styles of choro and jazz music, Latif has developed a unique approach towards playing the guitar. Nelson Latif merges techniques of the classical guitar with the musical influences assimilated during his career. His melodic phrasing was strongly influenced by bebop and the syncopated Brazilian rhythms. Also the virtuosity found in the flamenco way of playing the guitar forms a strong part of Latif's style.
Latif started his studies at the age of fourteen. Already at seventeen he was accompanying singers in the Sao Paulo nightlife. At this time, he had won a competition of a music school and he was awarded a scholarship to study conducting and composition at the Faculdade Santa Marcelina. Afterwards, he continued his classical guitar studies at the Faculdade Paulista de Musica. At the beginning of the 80´s, Latif joined several groups in his hometown. Two of these groups were a strong influence to his musical development: the Quarteto Paulista, a choro group formed by some of the best Sao Paulo musicians and a flamenco duo with guitarist Julio Ramires. Also during this period, Latif studied electric guitar with Mozart Mello and improvisation with Paulo Belinatti.

In 1988, after a tour in Europe with the choro trio Remelexo, Latif moved to Lisbon, where he started giving workshops at the Juventude musical Portuguesa and teaching classical guitar at the well-known Escola de Guitarra de Duarte Costa. In 1989 Latif moved to Amsterdam, where he lived for twelve years. During this time he was a member of Uit de Kunst, a Dutch governmental organization created to promote the foreign culture in Holland . Latif also continued his career as a musician playing with several important names of the Dutch jazz scene. Among others, saxophonists Paul Stoker and Michael Moore, and singers Josee Koning and Lilian Vieira . During this time, Latif also travelled through many countries with Brazilian musicians playing at jazz and world music festivals. He also started working at recording studios.
During the 90th, Latif started performing on the cavaquinho, an instrument that has became his trademark since then.
Between 1997 and 2000 he leaded the group Raiz Latina, touring many times through the Asian continent. They recorded their debut album in Seoul with the well-known Korean singer Kim Jun. Nelson Latif came back to Brazil in 2001, when he formed Trio Baru with the musicians Fernando Corbal and Bosco Oliveira.
He recorded the CD Brazilian Portrait together with the saxophonist Flávio Sandoval in 2003, and started promoting this album in Brazil and Europe . At this same year he went several times to Suriname to play concerts and give workshops and lectures. Together with the guitarists Stanley Noordpool and Robby Faverey he played at the Carifesta and the Groen Festival. In 2004, Latif formed a duo with the multi-instrumentalist Carlinhos Antunes. In 2005 he joined forces with the Ustad Zamir Khan, sitar and tabla player and a member of the legendary family of Indian musicians. Latif and Khan merged the traditional music of their countries, discovering a whole new world of musical possibilities. Also in 2005, Latif recorded the CD Choro, Samba e Afins, together with Dutch guitarist Joeri de Graaf. This recording was the starting point to the Choramundo Project, gathering musicians from Holland, Suriname and Brazil .

Gabriela Zuarez (Argentinie) heeft in 2001 ‘El Sur Mundo Project’ opgericht.
Deze danstheatergroep, met argentijnse artiesten, onderzoekt en creëert een fusie waaraan theater, moderne dans en de tangocultuur ten grondslag liggen.

Het resultaat is een nieuwe fysieke, theatrale code die zich laat omschrijven als sober, visueel, metaforisch en emotioneel; elementen die terug zijn te herleiden naar diep gelegen Argentijnse wortels die tegelijkertijd weer universeel worden.

Maar het belangrijkste uitgangspunt van het werk van El Sur Mundo Project is het poëtisch karakter en de geïntegreerde manier om beweging, dans en Tango cultuur om te zetten in visuele taal, door gebruik te maken van het spanningsveld tussen naturalisme en surrealisme.

'Orlando Miño' uit Argentinie

Orlando Miño uit Argentinië, geboren in 1957 in de provincie Entre Ríos.
Orlando Miño is componist, zanger en instrumentalist (gitaar, "charango","bombo","cajón") op het gebied van Argentijnse muziek (folklore en tango).
Sinds zijn professionele debuut in 1980, heeft hij gewerkt met bekende groepen en artiesten uit zijn land, zoals Inkari, Agua Pura (winnaar van het "Festival de Cosquin",belangrijkste folklore festival in Zuid Amerika, in 1983), Cuarteto de los Andes, Los Laikas, Icanovo, Antonio Tarragó Ross, Ariel Ramirez, Raúl Carnota en Perla Aguirre (voor wie hij heeft gewerkt als arrangeur en bassist in haar CD "Los fundadores del alma")

Artiesten zoals Julio Lacarra, Grupo Santaires, Mónica Abraham en Coqui Sosa hebben zijn composities gezongen. Hijzelf, heeft zijn muziek opgenomen in Argentinië onder de titel "Canciones en alpargatas".
Orlando gaf les als docent in Folklore Ritmes op de "Escuela Nacional de Danzas" te Buenos Aires.

In Nederland heeft hij gewerkt met o.a. Gabriel Aguilera en Lincoln Almada, in het programma "Cuerdas latinoamericanas"; met verschillende Nederlandse koren als "charango" speler voor de "Misa criolla" van Ariel Ramírez; als percussionist, in de Europese tour van Gustavo Toker en in het programma "Suite para Violeta" van Winanda van Vliet; als zanger, met de tango groep "Las guitarras del Plata" van Hernán Ruíz, en in de programma’s "Noche de ronda" van Jaime Rodríguez en "Meer dan Tango" van Juan Pablo Dobal.

Muziek en dansstijlen uit Argentinie :
De argentijnse dans en muziek traditie is wereldberoemd geworden door haar meest bekende verschijningsvorm : De tango. De oorsprong van de tango ligt in Buenos Aires , de hoofdstad van Argentinie.

Maar als we meer het binnenland ingaan , waar de "gauchos "(argentijnse cowboys) leven ,treffen wij een zeer gevarieerd aanbod van ritmes en dansstijlen .

Deze ritmes: chacarera , zamba , gato , chamamé , huayno , candombe ,zijn het resultaat van de mix tussen drie culturele stromingen : de inheemse ( voor de komst van de spanjaarden ) , de europese , en de afrikaanse , waarvan de laatste zijn intrede deed tijden de slavernij. Het is ons voornemen om jullie hier vandaag kennis mee te laten maken.
Wij wensen jullie een fijne muzikale reis door Argentinie.
